Pre-war Ridgewood two-families, the attached brick row houses built between roughly 1910 and 1940 along Myrtle, Gates, and the surrounding side streets, were originally plumbed with galvanized steel supply lines and cast-iron waste stacks. After 80 to 100 years, the galvanized is typically corroded from the inside out and the cast-iron joints are cracking at the caulk. Here’s what that means when something needs attention. We work in Ridgewood every week.

What happens to supply lines in a pre-war Ridgewood two-family?

Original supply is almost always galvanized steel. It worked fine for 30 years. After 60 years, the inside is coated with mineral scale and the pipe walls are half the original thickness in spots. Flow is reduced; pressure is reduced; failures happen without much warning.

We replace galvanized supply with copper or PEX as part of our plumbing services. Copper where it’s exposed and needs to match existing; PEX where it’s run inside walls. The transition fittings are straightforward, and the difference in flow is immediate.

What condition are the waste lines in a pre-war Ridgewood building?

Cast-iron waste stacks from this era are actually still doing fine in most buildings. Cast iron, if it was installed correctly, lasts 80–100 years. The problems we find are usually at the joints. Original lead-and-oakum caulked joints crack over time, especially where there’s been settling.

No-hub fittings are the modern replacement. We cut out the failed joint, install a stainless band coupling, and the stack is solid again. Full stack repairs and replacements are covered under our drains and sewer service.

What unexpected problems come up in pre-war Ridgewood two-family plumbing?

Every pre-war two-family has at least one. Buried shutoffs that were walled in during a 1970s renovation. Branch lines that don’t match the original drawings. A drain that exits through a wall into the neighbor’s foundation instead of straight down to the basement.

We’ve seen most of them. The job always starts with a walkthrough so we’re not discovering these things mid-repair. If you’re planning a gut renovation, see what our installation and renovation work covers.
