RIDGEWOOD · JOB STORY

How do you replace galvanized pipes in a Ridgewood gut renovation?

THE SHORT ANSWER

On a gut renovation in Ridgewood, you replace galvanized supply all the way back to the riser with new copper: new branches, new stubs, new angle stops at every fixture. In Ridgewood's pre-war two- and three-families, most built between 1905 and 1930, the original galvanized is almost always still in place, and after 80-90 years of mineral buildup the effective bore is often half what it started. The gut gives you the access; skipping the full replacement means opening walls again in five years.

THE JOB

The problem

The homeowner was gut-renovating a three-bedroom, two-bath on Palmetto Street, a pre-war two-family that had never had its supply lines touched. When we opened the walls, we found what we expected: original half-inch galvanized throughout, corroded from the inside out, flow down to a trickle in the branch lines. The cold supply to the second bath was so restricted it could barely fill a glass. When we cut into one of the branch lines. The bore had closed to about 3/8 of an inch. Original mineral scale had been building since the building was first plumbed.

What we did

With everything open, we ran new three-quarter-inch copper from the meter to a central manifold, then branched half-inch copper to every fixture, two baths, a kitchen, a utility sink, and a laundry hookup. New ball shutoffs at every branch, pressure tested before close-up, we also upsized the feed into the building's boiler to fix an undersized connection the original plumber had left. The whole rough-in took two days. Pressure tested the full rough-in at 100 PSI for 15 minutes before calling for close-up. Held clean.
