MIDDLE VILLAGE · JOB STORY

Why does shower valve depth matter in a Middle Village bathroom tile renovation?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Shower valve depth matters in a Middle Village tile renovation because adding new backer board and thicker tile moves the finished wall surface outward, and the existing valve, set for the old assembly, ends up at the wrong depth for the new trim plate. Middle Village's 1950s-1970s houses have standard 2x4 framing with shallow wall cavities, which means there's little margin for error: a valve even slightly off causes the trim plate to gap visibly or the stem to fall short. When the wall is already open for tile work, correcting the depth is a small cost compared to reopening a tiled wall later.

THE JOB

The problem

A homeowner on 80th Street was retiling the bathroom, new Schluter backer board and a 3/8-inch porcelain tile replacing the original 1/4-inch ceramic. The tile contractor flagged that the existing shower valve was set for the old assembly: no backer board, 1/4-inch tile. The new assembly added over 5/8 inch to the finished wall depth. At that depth, the existing trim plate would float visibly off the wall surface. The wall had to come open regardless, catching it now was the right call. The original valve was a Delta Monitor 1400 series. Discontinued cartridge, corroded bonnet nut. Rebuilding it was not practical.

What we did

With the wall open, removed the original valve, a late-1980s single-handle unit, and replaced it with a new Moen pressure-balance valve. Calculated the correct setback: framing face plus 1/2-inch Schluter board plus 3/8-inch tile, and set the valve body at exactly that depth from the stud face. Soldered new copper stubs, pressure tested. Before closing, mock-fit the trim plate with a spacer representing the tile thickness to confirm flush seating. Tile went in, trim plate seated with zero gap. No callbacks, no caulk-over. Replaced with a Moen M-PACT common valve body. Set at 3-5/8 inches from the stud face based on the measured finish assembly. That setback is what determines whether the trim plate seats flush or floats.
