Mixed galvanized and copper supply is common in Elmhurst buildings where one or two floors were repiped at some point but the rest wasn't. The main issue is the galvanized-to-copper transition joint, which can corrode from galvanic action between the two metals over time. It's also worth knowing whether the copper sections are from the 1950s–1960s or more recent — both can develop issues, but the failure modes differ. A systematic inspection tells you which sections are the priority.
Water pressure and color are the two simplest non-invasive indicators. Low pressure throughout — especially on upper floors — suggests galvanized pipes narrowing internally. Rust-colored hot water at first draw is another galvanized sign. For a definitive answer, we can inspect the supply connections in the basement mechanical room, which are usually accessible without opening walls, and tell you from there whether what goes upstairs is galvanized or copper.
