Oil-to-gas conversions done more than 20 years ago often left the original cast-iron boiler in place with just the burner swapped. That setup works until the boiler sections corrode or develop leaks — and a 1930s boiler that ran on oil for 40 years before conversion is likely on its last decade regardless. The other issue is the flue: oil flues are often oversized for the lower exhaust volume of a gas burner, which can cause draft problems and carbon monoxide risk if the liner wasn't resized at conversion. Both are worth checking in a Glendale home.
Low water pressure — especially on upper floors — is the primary sign. Galvanized steel supply narrows from the inside as mineral deposits build up over decades; a pipe that looks fine from outside can be 80% blocked inside. Discolored hot water (rust-brown at first draw) is the other common indicator. At 80-plus years, Glendale's original galvanized supply is well past its functional lifespan in most cases — we recommend replacing on a repipe schedule rather than waiting for a leak.
