We serve all these areas too.
Wood-frame construction is actually easier to open for plumbing work than masonry — you're cutting through drywall or plaster-on-lath, not brick or concrete. The consideration is moisture history: wood framing around a leaking pipe softens and can develop mold in ways masonry won't. When we open a wall in a Ditmas Park Victorian, we assess the framing for moisture damage around any leak areas before closing the wall — it's worth knowing if there's rot behind the tile before finishing the plumbing repair.
Start with the boiler: check the low-water cutoff function, operating pressure, and burner condition. A steam system running at the wrong pressure stresses every component downstream. Then assess the main vents — these are often the most neglected components, and clogged main vents cause the uneven heat and banging that residents complain about. Once the boiler and mains are sorted, individual radiator vents can be addressed apartment by apartment. A full system assessment before the heating season is far cheaper than emergency calls in January.
