Cast iron from the 1880s–1920s can last well over 100 years when sound, but it does deteriorate. The failure modes are internal scale buildup causing reduced flow, cracking at horizontal runs from decades of soil movement, and failed joints between sections. A camera inspection — feeding a lens through a cleanout — gives a definitive picture of what's inside. If the vertical stacks are intact and the joints are sealed, we typically recommend leaving them and addressing any failed horizontal sections selectively.
A 20-year-old cast-iron steam boiler is approaching the end of its typical lifespan, which runs 25–35 years with proper maintenance. Signs that replacement is imminent: visible cracks in the sections or chronic leaks at the push nipples (which cannot be repaired cost-effectively), annual repair costs exceeding $500–700, or inability to maintain pressure with normal makeup water usage. If the boiler is running well and has been regularly maintained, it may have another 5–10 years; if it hasn't been serviced consistently, a boiler assessment will tell you where it stands.
